Health insurance for the Italy digital nomad visa

Health insurance for the Italy digital nomad visa has to cover at least EUR 30,000 of medical care, hospitalization and repatriation, and the Italian consulate in New York calls inadequate coverage "the number one reason for visa rejections."

EUR 30,000 is about $33,430 at the October 29, 2026 rate. The New York consulate's own page writes the floor as "30,000 Euro (or $50,000)", so if you file there, buy to the dollar figure.

The EUR 30,000 floor and what it must cover

Three things, together: medical expenses, hospitalization and repatriation for medical reasons. A policy that states the first two and is silent on repatriation leaves a gap in your file.

The New York page asks for cover for the days you are outside the United States. Your own consulate's page is the one that counts, so read it before you buy.

Why an insurance card alone is refused

The consulate will not take your insurance card as proof. It wants a letter or certificate from the insurer that states the coverage.

If you cannot get one, the New York page accepts proof of an Italian policy, or an affidavit that you will buy one on arrival, before you register with the Questura.

Cover for the full visa period

The visa runs up to 12 months and is renewable. Match the policy term to the stay you apply for, not to the first few weeks of it.

Plans in our matrix that state more than EUR 30,000

Genki Traveler states EUR 1,000,000 of medical cover with repatriation covered, on terms of one to twelve months, in our capture of September 17, 2026. Heymondo Long Stay states $2,500,000 with repatriation included, from 90 days, captured August 24, 2026.

SafetyWing Nomad Insurance Essential states a $100,000 lifetime maximum. Our capture records emergency evacuation as covered but does not state repatriation, so check the policy wording before you rely on it.

We do not claim any consulate accepts a named plan. Put the policy wording next to the requirement and check it yourself.

Money, before you click: the Genki and SafetyWing links below pay Nomad Insiders a commission if you buy. The Heymondo link pays us nothing.

Who pays us, and who does not

Genki and SafetyWing pay us a commission if you buy through the links in the table. Heymondo does not; its link is direct and earns us nothing.

The order follows the stated cover, not the commission. If a plan does not state all three lines the consulate asks for, it is not the plan for this file.
