What the file has to contain
These are the documents the authorities expect for the lead route. This is a reference list, not an eligibility check: whether any one item is met depends on your own situation. Items marked for apostille must be legalized before they will be accepted.
Valid at least 15 months beyond intended travel date (per NY/Washington DC consular texts; the legal minimum is 3 months beyond visa expiry) with at least two blank pages for the visa sticker.
Names must exactly match the passport; white-background 3x4cm photo glued to the form. Prepared via the Farnesina visa portal.
Post-secondary degree, or at least 3 years of professional training/experience, in a career meeting art. 27-quater of Legislative Decree 286/1998.
Digital nomads: tax returns, client invoices, professional-association membership. Remote workers: tax returns, pay slips, or employer letter.
Remote worker: employment contract with a non-Italian company plus employer letter confirming fully-remote work and no Italian permanent establishment/clients. Digital nomad: contracts/invoices with foreign clients and any foreign business registration. No Italian employer or Italian clients allowed.
Floor cited as EUR 24,789/year in 2024 texts; ~EUR 28,000/year in 2026 practice. Shown via pay stubs, tax return, W-2, and/or several months of bank statements.
National-level background check (e.g. FBI Identity History Summary for the US), typically issued within the last 6 months, apostilled and translated into Italian by a sworn translator.
Coverage for medical expenses, hospitalization and repatriation of not less than EUR 30,000 (about USD 50,000). Insurance cards alone are not accepted; inadequate coverage is cited by the NY consulate as the number-one rejection reason.
Must cover the full visa duration. A registered 'Contratto di Locazione ad Uso Abitativo' (with proof the landlord filed it with the Agenzia delle Entrate) is required. Hotel bookings or a third party's hospitality declaration are NOT accepted (NY consulate denies applications without a lease/deed in the applicant's own name).
For non-citizens applying abroad (e.g. in the US): green card or valid long-term visa; B1/B2 tourist visas are not accepted, such applicants must apply in their home country.
Italy is a Hague Apostille Convention member, so a foreign criminal-record certificate from another member state needs only an apostille (not full consular legalization) plus a sworn Italian translation.

- Prepare the Type D application on the Farnesina portal and book the consulate appointment
Decision and collection
- Attend the consulate appointment and pay the visa fee
Arrive and register
- Enter Italy within the visa validity window
- Apply for the permesso di soggiorno within 8 working days of arrival
- Attend the Questura appointment (fingerprints) and collect the permesso di soggiorno card

How soon it would be ready, depends on the ambassy. Could be up to 3 month, you cannot travel during this time.
@AdFeath 路 2026-05-05. The digital nomad visa (approx EUR 28k income, remote-work proof, insurance, 1-year renewable) does NOT automatically unlock Italy's flat-tax or 7% regimes, which have separate criteria.
