"Never convert at the airport. Land with $100 cash in local currency from your home bank, then withdraw the rest from a real bank ATM. Avoid ‘Euronet’ and standalone yellow ATMs, which spread up to 12%."Nomad Insiders member intel
Your 1,000.00 USD in local currency, and how it reads against each city’s audited monthly budget. Cheapest cities first.
Verdict compares your amount, in USD, to the median audited monthly budget: 1.8x or more is very affordable, 1.15x affordable, 0.9x covers a month; below that we show how many days it does cover. Budgets are single-nomad, mid-range, from the city dossiers, re-priced at today’s exchange rate.
The lowest audited monthly budget on the board, re-priced at today’s rate.
Your dollar buys 22.7% fewer COP than a year ago.
The closest any tracked currency sits to the strongest the dollar has been there since 2020.
Descriptive readings from stored history, not advice. Each card is a different lens: the cheapest audited budget on the board, the biggest exchange-rate move over the last 12 months, and the currency where the dollar sits closest to its own stored high. Moves are nominal, against live daily rates. Countries with trailing inflation above 15% are left off the move and range cards, because there the exchange rate mostly tracks inflation rather than your dollar’s buying power; their full charts are below.
A Wise or Revolut account lets you hold 20-40 currencies natively. Convert once, in bulk, when the rate is favorable, then spend from the local balance without per-transaction conversions.
Credit-card networks use the inter-bank rate, which is closer to mid-market than any ATM. Pair with a no-FX card and you’re typically within 0.3% of mid-market on every tap.
Dynamic Currency Conversion is the merchant’s vig. They pocket 3-8% to convert in front of you. Always pay in local currency and let your card’s network handle the conversion. The terminal will try to trick you; say no.
This converter uses the mid-market rate, the midpoint between the buy and sell price of a currency on the global market, and the same reference rate the European Central Bank publishes. It is the fairest, most honest rate available: no bank spread, no hidden markup. Every rate on this page is pulled live and stamped with the exact time it was last updated. If a live rate is ever unavailable, we show an honest empty state rather than an estimated or cached number.
To convert, enter an amount, choose the currency you’re sending from and the currency you want to receive, and the result updates instantly. The currencies of the nomad destinations Nomad Insiders tracks (Thailand’s baht, Mexico’s peso, Colombia’s peso, Indonesia’s rupiah, Vietnam’s đồng, Georgia’s lari and more) are listed first, alongside USD, EUR and GBP.
Remember that the mid-market rate is what you compare against, not necessarily what you receive. Banks, cards and money-transfer services add a spread or fee on top. The tables above show the mid-market reference and the general way each transfer route prices you, so you can spot when a provider is quietly taking more than the ~0.5% a fair service charges.
