What the file has to contain

These are the documents the authorities expect for the lead route. This is a reference list, not an eligibility check: whether any one item is met depends on your own situation. Items marked for apostille must be legalized before they will be accepted.

01
Valid passport

Signed original passport, valid for the entirety of the intended stay in Brazil, with at least 2 unused (blank) visa pages.

02
Passport photo

One recent (max 3 months old) 36mm x 47mm color photo, front view, white background, no shadows, ICAO standard. Uploaded to the online form.

03
Criminal background check

Original criminal-records extract from country of nationality/residence for all applicants 18+, issued within the last 3 months, with ink stamp and signature (no digital-only versions). Must be apostilled (Hague members, e.g. FBI/state check apostilled for US, DVV apostille for Finland) or legalized at a Brazilian consulate (non-members), then sworn-translated into Portuguese in Brazil. Must show applicant's city of birth exactly as in passport.

APOSTILLE
04
Birth certificate / population-register extract

Original birth certificate (or equivalent population-information-system extract) showing parents' full names and city of birth. Apostilled (Hague members) or legalized (non-members), and sworn-translated into Portuguese in Brazil.

APOSTILLE
05
Proof of remote work - declaration

Signed declaration from the applicant attesting ability to perform professional activities remotely via information/communication technologies (notarized; apostille not required).

06
Proof of remote work - employment/service contract

Copy of the employment contract, service contract, or other documents proving a link with a foreign employer or foreign clients. If not in English, add an official translation to Portuguese or English.

07
Proof of means of subsistence / income

Proof of a foreign-source monthly income of at least US$1,500, OR available bank funds of at least US$18,000. Bank statements for the last 3 months or payment slips accepted.

08
Health / travel insurance valid in Brazil

Comprehensive travel insurance including medical coverage for the entire duration of stay, showing insurer name, policy number, insured's name/DOB, and validity dates covering the whole stay. English or translated to Portuguese/English.

09
Online visa application form (RER)

Completed electronic application form (Visa Request Form Receipt) generated at formulario-mre.serpro.gov.br, printed and signed in blue/black ink within the designated box.

Official document reference

10
Proof of legal residence in consular jurisdiction

For non-citizens of the consular country: proof of legal residence status (e.g. green card, residence permit card, driver's license or utility bill), per consulate.

Brazil joined the Hague Apostille Convention (in force since 14 Aug 2016), so US/EU-issued criminal-record and birth certificates need only an apostille from the issuing country's competent authority (e.g. US Secretary of State / FBI apostille via US Dept of State, or DVV in Finland) - not consular legalization; documents from non-Convention countries must instead be legalized at a Brazilian consulate.

Tax status
Digital-nomad income is from foreign sources and not from a Brazilian employer; however, individuals who become Brazilian tax residents (generally after 183 days in a 12-month period, or on obtaining a residence visa with intent to stay) may fall under Brazilian worldwide-income taxation. Confidence C - verify with a Brazilian tax advisor; not confirmed from an official immigration source.
Processing time
~15–30 days (per 2026 procedural change)
Official cost
Consular visa fee varies by nationality/consulate; ~EUR 100 (~US$110) for most nationalities per the Helsinki consulate. US applicants pay the reciprocity-based consular fee (commonly ~US$80-160). Separate Brazilian GRU fees apply later for Federal Police registration and the CRNM card (~US$40-90 equivalent each, set in BRL). Sworn-translation and apostille costs are extra.

The bottom line on Brazil is that the paperwork is worth it if you can prove a steady US$1,500 a month from a foreign source or show US$18,000 in bank funds, that’s the bar for the Digital Nomad Visa (VITEM XIV), and it’s the route that matters most. It buys you a one-year stay, renewable up to two years total, but it won’t auto-convert to permanent residency, so treat it as a solid temporary solution rather than a path to settling down. The income figures are set directly in US dollars, so there’s no messy exchange-rate math, and this info is officially confirmed.
