A status match is when one loyalty program grants you a tier because you already hold an equivalent tier somewhere else. It is handy when you move regions or switch to a different airline alliance and do not want to earn elite standing from scratch. The common catch is that the new program often asks you to complete a flying or spending challenge soon after to keep it.
You relocate to a region where a different airline dominates, and your hard-earned status with your old carrier is suddenly useless there. You ask the local program for a status match on the strength of it, and they grant the tier, on condition you fly a set challenge within a few months to hold on to it.
