An overnight flight that departs late and arrives early morning.
A red-eye is an overnight flight that leaves late and lands early in the morning, named for the tired eyes you step off with. It is not the same as an overnight layover, where you break your journey and wait through the night between two flights; a red-eye is one continuous overnight leg. It saves you a hotel night, but it can flatten your first day and leave you sprinting for a tight morning connection.
You book a red-eye to save on a hotel before a Monday of client calls. You land at dawn having barely slept, your onward connection is forty minutes away across a huge airport, and by the time you are at your desk you are in no shape to be useful.
Saves a hotel night but can wreck the first workday and increase miss risk on tight morning connections.
The difference is the whole point, so here is each one in a line.
