Right, in plain English

A rental that comes with the furniture, and often basic household bits, already in place. It saves buying or hauling stuff for a temporary stay. But what counts as furnished swings wildly between countries and listings, and it is not the same as a serviced apartment, which adds hotel-style extras like cleaning on top of the furniture.

Someone books a furnished flat for a few months expecting it move-in ready, and arrives to a bed and a sofa but no kitchenware, no bedding and no lamps. The listing called it furnished, but the local idea of that word stopped well short of what they needed to actually live there.

Why it matters

Essential for temporary stays, but definitions of “furnished” vary widely by country and listing.

How furnished a rental is · 4 terms

These grade what comes with the place.
A furnished rental includes furniture and often basics, semi-furnished has some but not a full set, with exactly what varies by country, and an unfurnished rental may have almost nothing, sometimes missing even kitchens or light fixtures.
A serviced apartment goes further the other way, adding hotel-like services such as cleaning and flexible booking.
