How far in advance you must formally tell a landlord you are moving out, set by the lease or local law. Give notice too late and you can owe rent past the day you actually leave. It is not the same as the lease end date: the end date is when the agreement finishes, while the notice period is the warning you must give, which often has to start well before that date.
Someone decides on a whim to leave a city and hands back the keys, only to learn the lease required a full month's written notice they never gave. They end up paying an extra month's rent on a flat they have already left, for a place they are no longer even in.
