Brazil's individual taxpayer registry number required for banking, long-stay practicalities and many contracts.
The CPF is Brazil's individual taxpayer number, and it is the key that unlocks ordinary life there: banking, long stays, and most contracts. Everyday Brazilian systems ask for it constantly, and having residency does not stand in for it. Without a CPF, simple things you expect to just work will stall.
You have your residency sorted and go to open a bank account or sign a lease in Brazil, only to be stopped at the first step because you have no CPF. The residency is not what the counter is asking for; the number is.
Opening accounts, signing leases and buying local services often stop without a CPF. Residency status alone does not replace this number in everyday Brazilian systems.
The difference is the whole point, so here is each one in a line.
