What the file has to contain
These are the documents the authorities expect for the lead route. This is a reference list, not an eligibility check: whether any one item is met depends on your own situation. Items marked for apostille must be legalized before they will be accepted.
Must be valid at time of application and through the intended stay. MOFA does not publish a Japan-wide minimum-validity rule for this visa; many consulates apply the customary 6-months-beyond-entry standard.
MOFA visa application form for Designated Activities (Digital Nomad), with passport-size photo.
Tax payment certificate, income certificate, employment contract, or contract with a business partner/client clearly stating contract period and amount. ISA requires the tax/income certificate from the country where the applicant worked.
Policy valid in Japan covering death, injury and illness for the entire stay, with medical-treatment coverage of at least JPY 10,000,000.
MOFA-designated form describing the remote work, employer/clients, approximate location in Japan and stay dates (required when no Certificate of Eligibility is presented).
Must be a citizen of one of the ~50 designated countries/regions that have a short-stay visa-waiver or bilateral arrangement with Japan. Eligibility is tied to visa-waiver status, not tax treaties.
Marriage certificate and birth certificates to prove relationship; each family member applies separately under a related Designated Activities family status and must carry their own qualifying insurance. If issued abroad these may need apostille/legalization.
Japan is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention; a foreign applicant's home-country public documents (police/background check, birth/marriage certificates, degrees, foreign company registry docs) should be apostilled by the issuing country's competent authority when they come from another Convention member, or consular-legalized if not. Japan's MOFA also issues apostilles on Japanese public documents.

- Official cost
- MOFA does not publish a fixed Digital Nomad visa fee on the central page; standard Japanese visa fees (roughly JPY 3,000 single-entry) plus insurance and document-authentication costs apply. Confirm exact fee with your local consulate.

Why Japan's Digital Nomad Visa is Kinda Worthless (My 6 months)Hoshi Japan 路 2026-07
So basically, DN visa is just a tourist visa that allow you to work while in Japan
The digital nomad visa is intended for high income individuals to come to Japan, spend a bunch of money, and then leave
You will be a tax resident of Japan from day 1 of your move, however, you will be a non-permanent resident for the first 5 years
Hoshi Japan 路 2026-07. A 6-month holder says Japan's digital nomad visa is 'kinda worthless' in practice because of its short non-renewable stay and lack of residency benefits.

The bottom line on Japan is that the Digital Nomad Status is the only route that matters for most remote workers, but its bar is steep: you need a gross annual income of at least JPY 10,000,000 (about USD 5,500 per month) at application time, and the status lasts just 6 months with no extension and no path to permanent residency. If you want something longer-term, the Business Manager Visa is the alternative, but it demands a JPY 30,000,000 paid-in capital investment in a Japanese company, a completely different commitment that only makes sense if you're building a real business, not just working remotely. So, the paperwork is worth it only if you clear that income threshold and are fine with a temporary stay; otherwise, Japan is not a practical long-term base for a typical digital nomad.
