What the file has to contain

These are the documents the authorities expect for the lead route. This is a reference list, not an eligibility check: whether any one item is met depends on your own situation. Items marked for apostille must be legalized before they will be accepted.

Hungary is a party to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention. Foreign public documents used in a residence-permit file (e.g. company registration, tax certificates) are commonly authenticated by apostille and require certified Hungarian translation where not in Hungarian; the OIF White Card factsheet lists required documents but does not spell out a blanket apostille rule, so confirm per-document with the receiving consulate.

The law says

Official rules, verified against government text.

Income requirement
$3,270 / month (USD)
Net monthly legal income at or above EUR 3,000 for at least the 6 months prior to entry, and maintained throughout the stay in Hungary.
Initial duration
1 year
Renewal
May be extended once for one additional year (same purpose only). Extension can only be filed in Hungary via the Enter Hungary platform, requires a valid permit at time of filing, and requires having resided in Hungary at least 90 days within any 180-day period prior to the extension application.
Maximum stay
2 years total (1 year + one 1-year extension)
Tax status
Immigration status is not tax residency. Hungarian tax residence is determined under Hungarian tax law (183-day presence / centre-of-vital-interests tests), not by the White Card. No official Hungarian government source confirms a White-Card-specific tax exemption; treat any 'first 6 months tax-free' claims from blogs as unverified. Hungary's flat personal income tax is 15%.
Processing time
Statutory administrative period 21 days; the authority must decide on the merits within 30 days of a complete submission (time for remedying deficiencies is not counted).
Official cost
Practitioner-reported administrative service fees: EUR ~110 when filed at a Hungarian mission abroad; HUF ~39,000 in person in Hungary; HUF ~26,000 via Enter Hungary. The OIF factsheet links to a fee schedule but the amount is not shown inline; treat exact figures as B/C. USD ~120 approximates the EUR 110 consular fee.

The bottom line is that Hungary’s main remote-worker route, the White Card, is a clean one-year permit with a hard income bar of at least EUR 3,000 net monthly for the six months before you arrive, but it is a deliberate dead end, with no path to permanent residency and a ban on switching to any other permit afterward. If you want the paperwork to lead somewhere long-term, the White Card is not worth it; instead, you’d need to look at the Guest Investor permit (a 10-year stay, though its path to PR is unconfirmed) or the riskier, less-documented Guest Self-Employment route, which reportedly can build toward residency but is not officially confirmed.
