§ The case file

What the file has to contain

These are the documents the authorities expect for the lead route. This is a reference list, not an eligibility check: whether any one item is met depends on your own situation. Items marked for apostille must be legalized before they will be accepted.

01
Valid passport

Passport with adequate remaining validity beyond the intended stay and blank visa pages.

02
National (long-stay / Type D) visa application form

Completed and signed Greek long-stay visa application form submitted to the consulate.

Official document reference

Proof of remote work for a non-Greek employer/clients or ownership of a business outside Greece

Employment contract, client/service agreements, or company registration documents evidencing remote work performed for entities based outside Greece.

04
Declaration not to provide services or work for an employer based in Greece

Signed solemn declaration that work is exclusively for foreign employers/clients.

05
Proof of income at or above EUR 3,500 net/month

Bank statements, payslips, and/or tax returns demonstrating stable monthly net income meeting the threshold (plus dependent uplifts if applicable).

06
Criminal-record / police-clearance certificate

Clean criminal record from your country of residence/nationality (e.g., FBI Identity History Summary for US nationals). Must be apostilled in the issuing country and officially translated into Greek.

APOSTILLE
07
Health insurance valid in Greece

Private health insurance covering medical care and hospitalization for the full stay.

08
Proof of accommodation in Greece

Rental/lease agreement, property deed, or hotel booking establishing where you will stay.

09
Passport-size photographs

Recent biometric-standard photos per consular specification.

10
Civil-status documents (if applying with family)

Marriage certificate and children's birth certificates for dependents; apostilled and translated into Greek.

APOSTILLE

Greece is a party to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention (in force since 1985), so a foreign public document such as an FBI/national police criminal-record certificate needs an apostille from the issuing country plus an official Greek translation rather than consular legalization.

The law says

Official rules, verified against government text.

Income requirement
$3,850 / month (USD)
EUR 3,500 net/month for the main applicant; commonly +20% (~EUR 700) for a spouse and +15% (~EUR 525) per dependent child.
Initial duration
Up to 12 months, then residence permit
Renewal
The 2-year residence permit is renewable for further 2-year periods; apply roughly 2 months before expiry at the local immigration office with updated proof of income, remote work and accommodation.
Maximum stay
Indefinite in practice: 12-month visa then 2-year residence permit, renewable while income and remote-work conditions continue to be met
Tax status
Separate 50% income-tax exemption regime for new residents (Art. 5C ITC, Law 4758/2020, AADE-confirmed): 50% off Greek-source employment/business income for 7 years; requires non-residence in 5 of prior 6 years, relocation from EU/EEA or cooperating country, and 2-year minimum stay declaration.
Processing time
Apply for a Type D digital nomad visa at a Greek consulate or embassy of residence before travel, as in-country tourist-to-permit applications were abolished under Law 5275/2026 from 5 February 2026. Consular timing varies by post, and after entry the residence permit commonly takes up to about 90 days, during which the blue receipt typically authorizes stay.
Official cost
Two separate state charges: ~EUR 75 national visa fee at the consulate, then ~EUR 1,000 residence-permit fee plus ~EUR 16 card fee in Greece. USD shown is the residence-permit stage (~EUR 1,000). Add translation, apostille and insurance costs separately.

The bottom line on Greece: the Digital Nomad Visa is your only real route, and it is worth it only if you can show a clean EUR 3,500 net monthly income for yourself, roughly USD 3,850, plus extra for family, and you are fine with the permit being temporary, not a fast track to permanent residence. That income bar is the whole game, and it is reported but not officially confirmed, so treat the exact number as a moving target until you check with the consulate. If you clear it and you are okay with a 12-month start and a 7-year slog toward long-term status, the paperwork is manageable; if not, it is a hard pass.
