§ The case file

What the file has to contain

These are the documents the authorities expect for the lead route. This is a reference list, not an eligibility check: whether any one item is met depends on your own situation. Items marked for apostille must be legalized before they will be accepted.

01
Valid travel document (passport)

Valid at least 3 months beyond intended departure from the Schengen area, with sufficient blank pages (standard Schengen/Estonian visa rule).

Official document reference

02
Completed visa application form

Standard Schengen short-stay form for a C-visa, or the Estonian national long-stay (D) visa application form; there is no separate DNV-numbered form. The D-visa form can be completed online via the PPA self-service portal.

Official document reference

03
Proof of remote / location-independent work

Active employment contract with a company registered outside Estonia, ownership of a company registered abroad, or freelance contracts with clients mostly outside Estonia.

Official document reference

04
Proof of income for the prior 6 months

Bank statements and/or pay slips showing recurring gross income of at least EUR 4,500/month across the six months preceding the application.

Official document reference

05
Health/medical insurance

Insurance valid in Estonia covering the entire intended stay; Schengen norm is a minimum EUR 30,000 coverage (exact figure not stated on a DNV-specific official page).

Official document reference

06
Background check / clean record

Applicants pass a background check as part of standard visa processing. Where the mission requests a foreign criminal-record certificate, it must be apostilled if issued by a Hague member state (or legalized if from a non-member state); it is not a universal DNV document but should be prepared.

APOSTILLE
07
Passport-style biometric photograph

One recent colour photo meeting Estonian/MFA specifications.

Official document reference

08
State fee payment

~EUR 100 (D-visa) or ~EUR 80 (C-visa) per the standard Estonian visa fee schedule.

Estonia is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so a foreign public document (e.g. a criminal-record certificate) needs only an apostille from a fellow member state; documents from non-member states require full consular legalization instead.

to apply for digital nomad visa you need a monthly income of €4500 minimum. Two $2-3k incomes is plenty to live comfortably in Estonia.

For most remote workers, the route that matters is the Digital Nomad Visa, and the bar is a reported but not officially confirmed income benchmark of about USD 4,950 per month, shown as EUR 4,500 gross across the six months before you apply. It gets you a non-renewable D-visa for up to a year, but it leads nowhere permanent, time on it doesn't count toward residency. If you want a path to long-term residence, you'd need to switch to a temporary residence permit like the Startup Visa, which trades a fixed income test for a Startup Committee review of your business idea plus proof you can support yourself.
