§ Points Miles

Dynamic award pricing

also called revenue-based awards · cash-linked awards

Award costs that float with cash demand instead of fixed chart prices.

Right, in plain English

Dynamic award pricing means the number of points a flight costs is not fixed; it rises and falls with how much cash the airline could otherwise get for that seat. On busy dates the same route can cost far more points than on a quiet one, and there is no printed chart promising you a set rate. So the points price is a moving target you have to check on the actual dates, not something you can assume in advance.

You transfer a pile of points to an airline expecting the flight to cost what you saw last month. By the time the points land, your travel dates have turned into a peak period, the award price has jumped, and now you are holding points in a program you cannot easily move them back out of.

Why it matters

Peak dates can consume far more points, so transferring points before checking price is risky.
