Living in Mexico City on $3,000 a month
Living in Mexico City on $3,000 a month clears our $2,800 comfort tier with $200 to spare, right up until you sign a Roma Norte lease at the $1,679 listing median.
The tiers are from our city audit of June 14, 2026. The rents below are September 5, 2026 listings, so where the two disagree, trust the listings.

Where $3,000 lands on our four tiers
Our tiers run $1,400, $2,200, $2,800 and $3,800. Three thousand sits between comfort and everything-in: the flat in the area you want, a gym, weekends away, no counting coffees.
It does not reach the $3,800 everything-in tier. The file marks prices up 9% on the year.

Rent by neighborhood, from September listings
A one-bedroom listing median runs from $1,060 in Coyoacán to $2,248 in Polanco, with Condesa at $1,627 and Roma Norte at $1,679.
Those are inmuebles24 asking rents captured September 5, 2026, with the listing count beside each median. Asking is not signed, and a thin count is a hint, not a market.
Our audited Escandón and Juárez one-bedroom is $750 a month, and that is where a $3,000 month stops feeling tight.

What the rest of the $3,000 buys
Take a Roma Norte one-bedroom at $1,679 and $1,321 is left.
Coworking at $140 a month, groceries for one at $280 a month, a gym at $40 a month and a SIM at $15 a month come to $475, leaving $846 for dinners for two at $45, Ubers at $4 across town and everything else.
That is a real life in a good neighborhood. It is not a life that absorbs a bad month.
The peso is the swing factor
Rents are quoted in pesos and your budget is in dollars. The Roma Norte median was MXN 28,375: $1,679 at the capture-day rate of 16.90, and $1,562 at 18.16 on October 4, 2026.
A stronger peso shrinks the budget without anyone raising a price. Keep a few hundred dollars of slack for it.
$3,000 does not clear the temporary resident income bar
Mexico's temporary resident visa on economic solvency asks for $4,510 a month at US-dollar consulates, or MXN 83,640 a month at peso consulates, which is $4,605 at the October 4, 2026 rate. The savings route is an average balance of $75,950 over 12 months. Figures vary by consulate, so check yours.
A US passport can enter visa-free for up to 180 days, but officers often write in fewer, sometimes 30 to 90. The Mexico visa file has the routes.
